Fabens, TX~Letterboxing

We took a fascinating diversion east of El Paso, in Fabens Texas, where we followed some clues for a letterbox hidden at the site of The Cattlemen's Restaurant near the Indian Cliffs.

Talk about 'Off-The-Beaten-Trail'! We were about 4 miles north of I-10 on a road not even listed on the map, where the road and landscape was barren of any development, except this one restaurant perched on the top of a hill, surrounded with stone and adobe walls.

The movie "The Resurrection" was filmed here and the place feels like a film set, too. Lots of unique things to see and explore. We had been told that the steaks were the best in West Texas, but we arrived here 3 hours too early. So instead we spent a couple hours visiting the animals, playing in the Indian Maze and Fort Apache playground.

John figured out the cryptic clues and found the letterbox that was cleverly hidden. The stamp inside was a very unique custom stamp perfect for it's location. John is becoming a key player in finding letterboxes and we are very happy he has been joining us on our letterboxing forays.

The place had a good size zoo with animals like Longhorns, Bison, Llamas, rabbits, ostriches, native birds, exotic goats and sheep, even a rattlensnake pit!

Here's one of the friendly Longhorn cattle.Notice the striking white Indian Cliffs in the background.
There were many western props set up all around the park and zoo.
The rattlensnake pit was filled with more than 20 large rattlesnakes!
The Indian Maze was a fun trip around coyote fence and yucca bends, curves, doorways, and dead ends. It was a very hot day, though, in the 90's!
The Fort Apache playgound was a huge hit with the kids!

Another friendly Longhorn
The two bison were very impressive up close.
