We took a scenic drive through a little farming community called Pomerene yeterday, looking for the recently placed letterbox "Doc and Brutus".
The box has a beautiful story behind it. The placer's Mom passed a way a year ago, and she had willed her two 30+ year old macaws to the Oasis Bird Santuary in Pomerene, AZ. The placer, the deceased woman's daughter, who lives in Holland, visits once a year and felt compelled to memoralize her Mother's relationship with her beloved birds, with a special letterbox.
We were very pleased to have found it and the stamp was very appropriate for the situation. We tried to visit with Doc and Brutus while there, but the staff had already finished for the day and were esconced in their mobile homes on the property to escape the 108 degree afternoon temps.
But we did manage to take a peek and a few pics. And you can click this link to check out Doc and Brutus at the Oasis Sanctuary.
There are 500+ birds in this rescue, mostly outdoors in the old pecan orchard under shade covers and cool mist sprays. The area is filled with the squawks, chatterings, and voices of all those birds.
The Sanctuary also has many other animals that have been rescued, too, including dogs, cats, horses, cows, donkeys, reptiles, etc. We were impressed with how clean and well organized everything is there.
