Well, were back on the road again. On our way to house sit for our Dutch friends, Sybelle, Arnold, Bibiana and Ingo in southern, AZ.
We got a late start after 1pm because we had a long list of things of do before we left.
We stopped off in Socorro to find "The Aliens have Landed Letterbox", which was placed in an old abandoned Drive-In Movie location, not far from where many claimed to have seen an alien spaceship land in the 1960's. We were here during the hottest part of the day and it was a beastly drudge of an experience. Along with lots of broken glass and sharp thorns, we also found a rat skeleton. The stamp was really cool, though, but we were happy to get back in the van and cruise comfy in the A/C again!Later we drove into Truth or Consequences, NM, near the future home of New Mexico's "International Space Port".
We were here to find 2 letterboxes in the same series called Space Port, due to the planning for a future Space Port, to be used for Public Space Travel. Click here for more info, but alas, the first box, placed by Astro D, at the Hot Springs Art Sculpture seems to have gone missing. And it was only placed here a few weeks ago! We saw what the stamp "Fly me to the Moon" looked like in the log book of the second box and it was gorgeous! Bummer that its gone.
The second box, "Take me to your Leader" was an easy drive-by find, and the kids loved the hand-carved robot/alien stamp.
After we reached Deming, we drove a bit east to find a fascinating letterbox called "The Cabinet Box", placed inside Cabinetlandia's National Library. The unique stamp was perfect for this box and will makes us smile everytime we look at it! Click here to learn more about the clever and hilarious story of Cabinetlandia (with photos), the name of the acre of land purchased near Deming. The box was placed here to share the story of how folks at Cabinet Magazine bought this little worthless acre east of Deming, that was originally marketed to naive easterners as luxury vacation 'ranchettes' (insert hige Guffaw here!!). Cabinet Magazine then sold off postage stamp size lots to individual land-sharers as a sort of political and artistic statement.Click for fascinating info on Cabinet Magazine We had such ablast finding this box, literally hidden in the middle of nowhere inside of a cabinet! There were no street names, no real roads (just double tire tracks), with most overgrown by grasses and tumble weeds!
While on our mission, an Amtrak Passenger train cruised by and we all waved at the people inside. We wondered what they were thinking about us out there, if we were lost or just a strange vision or hallucination. Either way, many folks waved back at us. hehe!
We also saw and got close to many jack rabbits, cottontail bunnies, quail, roadrunners, a millipede, and hawks. We had to wait for cattle crossing the road, and slow down when a large deer jumped out in front of us.
What an adventure!
The Cabinet National Library. I didn't tell much about this location before we went searching, so,before we arrived, Jax and Jem asked if the library would have computers and a bathroom. Well, the latter was sort of available in an au natural sort of way !hehe
The Cabinetlandia mailbox waiting for mail...or even just a postman to come visit.
Mooooo!
Well, because of our later start, we didn't arrive to our final destination until 10pm, Arizona Time. Which was not a problem because Sybelle and kids are night owls, like us, and they had the lights on waiting for us when we arrived. We all stayed up past midnight catching up and visiting.
Strangely enough, it feels like home here, and we are looking forward to a fun and adventurous 2 weeks here in AZ!
