Letterboxing~Rio Grande Bosque

I'm behind on posting photos and keeping up with our activities around here. We've been busy.
Last week we did some letterboxing in Albuquerque at the Rio Grande Nature Center. A group of girl scouts placed 3 boxes in the Bosque and we had a fun afternoon looking for their boxes using their clever clues. Their series of 3 boxes was called Bosque: Letterboxing is for the birds and it led us through 2.5 miles of wooded trails.

We saw lots of avian and reptilian wildlife, including this roadrunner. And his friend racing across the bridge. These Jetty Jacks are sort of an eyesore, but the kids felt like we were walking into a magical land once we walked through them.Jetty Jacks were installed many years ago to help trap sediment and debris during flooding. They also were meant to build up it's own levee to confine the river channel. Unfortunately, the system is outdated because the river rarely floods anymore because of dams and the heavy useage all along it's length from Colorado to Mexico. We enjoyed walking below the shady canopy of the large cottonwoods. It was a hot day with temps in the 90's.If it wasn't for the full and fast moving river, we would have been taking a swim. The Rio Grande reminded me of my morning cup of tea with milk and sugar. We found all 3 letterboxes and had a wonderful hike beside the mighty Rio Grande River.
