Good Bye Baby Meringue
What a sad 24 hours. We not only lost our dear lop-eared bunny, our first bunny, Schubert. But less than 12 hours later our baby guinea pig named Meringue passed away, too.
She was Marshmallow's baby, born in July 2006. We had just been given Marshmallow in June and was told she was a "He". I knew right away that wasn't true and I could already tell she was pregnant.
It was so exciting to feel the baby moving inside of her and to see the baby after it was born. And best of all, Marshmallow's baby was a girl. So, we knew we could keep her and she'd be her Mama's companion.
And we enjoyed watching her grow, and popcorn and race around the cage. She was as soft and fluffy as silk....and looked like the meringue on top of a pie.
John and I think we know why both Schubert and Meringue died so close together. We believe that the carrots or broccoli we fed them was tainted in some way with toxins, bacteria, or mold. A couple of the other guinea pigs and rabbits were also mildly sick and swollen, as with gas. But they must have stronger immune systems or something. I was terrified that another of our critters would also die. I was fearful to even peek in their cages.
But they all seem to be doing better now. Except we will be missing baby Meringue so much. I know that Marshmallow is very sad, too.
God Speed over the Rainbow Bridge, Meringue. Do a few of your funny popcorns while floating on those puffy clouds up there........
