New Driver
Jackson & Jeremiah have been itching to drive Daddy's new John Deere tractor. John has been cautious about letting them try it because of safety and also because he just loves cruising around on our acreage driving his big, powerful green machine. haha
But yesterday Jackson got his turn. After John mowed a small grassy side yard close to the house.
But first a couple pics of my happy cowpokes.
Jackson eagerly jumped on the John Deere and listened intently to Daddy's instructions. Jackson was escatic!
Daddy walked beside him just like he did when Jackson rode his bike alone for the first time.
And then Jackson was on his own. He is pretty intense and thrilled.
Happy kid!

ABQ Lacrosse~Homeschooler Plays for High School!
Got some exciting news to share! Even though our son Jackson has been playing lacrosse for a number of years, through lacrosse camps, scrimmages, and practices, he had never played a 'real' game against another 'real' team.
But yesterday Jackson did just that!
Jackson played lacrosse for Sandia Prep, a local Albuquerque private high school, and he played against the Varsity Lacrosse team at Bosque School, another private school.
Jackson is the youngest player on the team, playing lacrosse among kids aged 12-17 yrs old. But because he has years of experience, he held his own and did very well.
This opportunity started when one of my husband, John's, former lacrosse players at UNM decided to get more involved in the world of lacrosse. He moved up as Assistant Lacrosse Coach to John at UNM, and then created his own company, called South West Lacrosse. This company was created to promote and expand lacrosse in New Mexico by organizing summer lacrosse sports camp, which Jackson has participated in, along with creating and supporting local high school teams.
So far, it has been a huge success, in large part to Michael Mooney, Lacrosse SouthWest' Founder and Organizer.
Recently, Michael, along with John decided to start up a brand new team at Sandia Prep and John was asked to volunteer as the Head Coach.
The parents at Sandia Prep are extremely supportive and the kids stood in line to join the newly formed lacrosse team. Many of them, who had never even held a lacrosse stick before.
Several of the kids on the new team had played in Michael's summer lacrosse sportz camps and remembered Jackson and asked Coach John if Jackson could join them on the team. Because the new lacrosse team isn't a varsity team, just a club team, Jackson was welcome to play lacrosse with Sandia Prep students.
There has recently been a new homeschool law/opportunity passed concerning homeschooled students being offered the chance to play One Sport through a ABQ public school. But this new law didn't have any bearing on Jackson's opportunity to play lacrosse for Sandia Prep.
Well, it was a busy day for us because first we had to drop off Jeremiah with his baseball coach, his wife and our friends, so he could attend the baseball game that afternoon. Then John, Jenna, Jackson and I drove to ABQ for the lacrosse game.
And after the game was over, we all hauled ourselves back over to the East Mountains to watch Jeremiah (and Jackson, too) play the baseball game. So, it was a long, exhausting day, particularly for Jackson, who played both baseball and Lacrosse one after the other.
But it was also a really great day, too!

Sandia Prep did an amazing job for it being their very first game and Sandia Prep's very first lacrosse team, and for it being the very first time many of the players had ever even held a lacrosse stick before their previous 3 week practice!!

And two TV stations were there to interview players and coaches, and video tape the game. CH 13 KRQE broadcasted the story last night. And CH 4 will broadcast the story tomorrow night! Here's a photo from CH 13 on our TV.

Pasture Ball
Because I never know when a photographic moment will occur...and I've learned the hard way by missing some really special ones....I now carry my camera just about everywhere I go....even the barn.
As I was walking down from the barn last week, I caught sight of John helping Jeremiah practice his baseball, especially his fierce pitching.
Baseball season starts up next month and Jeremiah is powerful and raring to go!

Rocket Boy
Jackson has been fascinated with rocketry every since we first read Homer Hickam's book called Rocket Boys: A Memoir, and then watched the movie based on it called October Sky. Interestingly, the title of the paperback released at the same time was changed to the movie title, which is an ANAGRAM of Rocket Boys (take the letters of rocket boys and move them around to spell october sky!). Is that cool, or what?
The book and movie are based upon Homer Hickam's life as a young boy growing up in Coalwood, WV and aspiring to be a rocket scientist. For more info about Homer Hickam and his books and movie, click

So, for the past 2 years, Jackson has been studying and reading about rocketry, watching documentaries and science shows about rocketery, and building and launching rockets.
John is thoroughly enjoying Jackson's interest in rockets and they spend each week involved in rocketry.
Usually we launch smaller rockets at our 3 acre ranch, but with all the trees and tall grasses, it's often difficult to find the rockets after being launched.
So, at least once a week, Jackson and John head to the city to launch rockets at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Park, off Alamada Rd. The park is open to the pubic and allows model airplanes, kites and model rockets. John and Jackson like the large open expanse of grass which makes it easier to find the rockets after being launched.
Last weekend, they went to the park and John took the following pictures. Click for larger views.

A Visitor
Over the weekend, John's good friend, and his assistant lacrosse coach for the University of New Mexico, came for a visit and dinner. I served crabcakes with green chile aioli sauce, along with dirty rice and a salad. We enjoyed his visit very much, since he has temporarily moved to NC with his wife and wants to move back to New Mexico in the future. We hope it is sooner and later!

Mark Twain Reader
John presented Jeremiah with a very special book on Christmas Day. It is a compilation of Mark Twain stories, including Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and others.
Jeremiah loves to read, especially books with adventure, mystery, fantasy and history. And he was very happy and honored to be given this special book that he can keep throughout his growing years. His Daddy even signed the inside with a few loving words, too.
Something I found ironic, though. And a little funny, is how, in the previous post, with the spoofy homeschooling video, there was mention of how their homeschooled kid reads Tom Sawyer....so it looks like we are fitting the homeschool description without even trying! Scary! hehehe

An Early Christmas Present
We adopted a dog!!
Let me start at the beginning before anyone thinks we just jump out and do things without any thought.
Ten years ago, we had to euthanize our beloved German Shepherd girl, named Cory. She was a big part in our lives for over 13 years. It was so sad for us, but especially for John, that he didn't want to consider adopting any new dogs, but especially not a German Shepherd.
But over the past year or two, John has been talking about finding the perfect German Shepherd to be a part of family once again.
We had decided that we would start looking in the Spring, after we had moved onto our mini-ranch.
Well it appears that those plans have been jump-started!
John was out driving around Albuquerque and happened to notice someone selling puppies from the back of their truck. And of course, those puppies just so happened to be German Shepherds.
And of course, John had to just stop 'and take a look'.
Well the rest is history!
The parents of the puppies were also there and they were gorgeous. John fell in love with the smallest puppy in the litter, but because John had to go back to work, he paid the man the money, and went on his way. But it just so happens that the man selling the puppies lives only 15 minutes away from us, so John made plans to go pick up the puppy after he was done with work.
So, we've had this darling little 7 week old German Shepherd for 3 days now. When she first arrived, she was dirty (I gave her a bath), very skinny with hip bones sticking out, and a bloated belly (worms). She was also not very lively.
Because she had not been given any vaccines or been wormed, John took her into the Vet on Saturday and got all that done. We've been giving her anti-diahrea medicine and along with the food several times a day, the worming and shots, and love and attention.....she is really thriving, full of puppy enthusiasm, and very loving and adorable.
This puppy is so smart. We keep her in the crate at night and when we can't actively supervise her. But she is already letting us know when she has to go potty, and as soon as she's outside, she gets it all done, and wants to go back inside.
John is SO happy. We could never have bought him an store-bought gift that would have brought him this much joy. Yep. He's got Puppy Love!

Grill Master
After 17 years of marriage and only one rusty charcoal grill, we've finally moved up in the culinary world and bought a gas grill. We are thoroughly enjoying quickly grilled meats and veggies, and I'm appreciating that John, the Grill Master, has found a way to share in the cooking duties. He gets excited about firing up the grill and bringing in some tasty food to feed his family, too.
I have no idea what Jackson is doing. He is very much into posing and acting out different characters right now.

25 pounds less a man!
John started an herbal weightloss program called Isogenics about 2 weeks ago and he has aleady lost 25 pounds!! He's feeling better with lots more energy and we are SO proud of him!!

Dad & Double Dudes Depot Day
Every first Saturday of the month, John and our Dynamic Duo make plans to attend Home Depot's Kid's Workshop. They also like doing the Lowe's Kid's Workshop on the second Saturday of the month, too, and they collect the patches, pins and certificates from both workshops.
John looks forward to spending this special time with his boys, and I get to spend beautiful one-on-one moments with Jenna, too.

Jax Lax!
Jackson is attending a Lacrosse Sports Camp this week in Albuquerque, hosted by one of John's lacrosse players, Michael Mooney. Jackson went to last year's lacrosse camp, too and had a great time. He has been really excited about this year's camp.
It is all week, and all day. In the hot New Mexico sun. They are having a blast!
John took this picture. He gets a kick out of laying out Jackson's lacrosse gear the night before.
Jeremiah, Jenna and I stayed home, so all the photos following were taken by either Jackson or John. John, feeling the heat. Notice he's proudly wearing his UNM Lacrosse Head Coach shirt, too.

A couple of Coach Mooney's friends, two UNM girls showed up with coolers of Red Bull. Jackson was smitten...not just with the Red Bull either. He thought these girls were very cute! (He even blushed telling me about them.) Gosh! My little boy is not so little anymore! So, he decided to take their picture.
He even took several photos of the girls as they walked away!
He's been making some new friends, getting tons of outside exercise (goes to sleep as soon as it's dark outside), honing his lacrosse skills, and growing up to be an amazingly handsome young man. I'm SO proud of my Jackson. He is such a wonderful young person. I'm so blessed that he's my son.
