Javelinas in the front yard

After being here a week in Arizona, we finally were rewarded with seeing a herd of Javelinas!! The dogs were barking like crazy as we were watching "National Treasure" on video, so we looked outside and saw a flurry of furry ghost like creatures scurrying about in the front yard.
After we let the dogs out, one of the dogs scattered one of the javelinas, a very large, very hairy, and very ugly 'boar' into a bright clearing. Wow! What excitement!

"Javalena" is the local name for what is technically a collared peccary: related to domestic pigs without quite being pigs themselves.

These are not small animals; they can weigh 50 pounds and are the size of a medium sized dog. Javalenas can be snarly, grouchy things with mouths full of teeth and no real reason not to use them. (They eat prickly pear cactus, spines and all; I'm sure I'd be grouchy and cantankerous too.)
I wasn't able to take a photo of the ones we saw because it all happened too fast and in the dark, no less, but I was able to borrow a photo from online to show what a javelina looks like.
