We had an overnight visitor the other night. Noticeable way up in under our front entryway, only because of the large window above our front door. Whenever I discover a bird I'm not familiar with, I always bring out my favorite bird identification book "Golden's Guide to Field Identification, Birds of North America".
From the information we spent poring over, it seems that our visitor was probably an immature female Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker or possibly a Brown Creeper. If I could have seen the bird's head it would have made identification much easier and more precise, but this visitor was tucked in soundly for the night.
Sleep tight.
